MEET CINDY

Cindy Byrd, CPA, is the Deputy State Auditor for Local Government Services.

Cindy graduated from East Central University in 1997 with a Bachelor of Science in Accounting, and she became a certified public accountant in 2003. She lives in rural Oklahoma with her husband, Steve. She provides training across the state for county officials, school-district personnel, and auditors on a host of issues to help ensure public funds are safeguarded.

Cindy has more than 20 years of experience in auditing and has planned, conducted, and trained in various types of audits.

“I have first-hand experience, across the state, effectively administering audits to identify wasteful spending and create more responsive government at every level. I have also traveled from county to county, performing audits and helping county officials have the tools they need to do their jobs more effectively and efficiently.”

Cindy eliminated the five-year backlog of county audits and oversaw 304 of the 411 audits published in Fiscal Year 2017.

“Without the money to make additional hires, I stretched limited resources and designed an alternative audit program so that, at the end of two years, not only were we caught up with county audits, but we also trained, encouraged, and built trust with county officials so that we have great working relationships moving forward.”

Cindy has led local-government audits that have uncovered millions of dollars in fraud and waste.

“My teams have performed audits that have uncovered $5 million in misuse of FEMA funds and led to criminal charges against county commissioners and sheriffs as well as county employees. There are bad people in every line of work, and, when it comes to our elected officials, we strive to root out the few who give the rest a bad name.”

Cindy has the experience and leadership that Oklahoma needs now.
